A Prayer for Sunday School

The Shine On Storybook Bibles that each family received to read at home between Sundays.

This week at Broadway, we are beginning a new Sunday School curriculum with the children. I am beyond excited for the ways the Shine On Curriculum will help our children meet God in new and imaginative ways.

As I prepared to lead our Sunday School teachers through the first week’s lesson, this prayer came to my heart, and it is one that I will pray time and time again as we continue to lead the children to jump into the stories of our faith with awe and wonder.

God of Learning,
Who blesses children when they seek to know you more deeply,
We pray that you will bless our wondering.
Creative God, meet us in our imagining.
Fill our minds with awe
As we seek to jump into the sidewalk chalk drawings of your story.
Open not only our minds,
But our hearts,
To experience each word…
Each step…
Each character…
In new and inspiring ways.

Holy God,
Meet us where we are today,
And guide us further,
Than we’ve allowed ourselves to travel.

May our journey through your word cause us
To wake each day
With a renewed sense of passion
To Shine your word in the hearts of the children we teach.

On Saturday night,
We pray that you would
Ignite our hearts with such excitement
That we would be like children on Christmas Eve,
Anxious and energized,
To wake the next morning
And share your stories,
Old in print,
But new in our hearts
With the one child
Or dozen children
Who come to meet you through us.

Join us, please,
Dear God,
In our wonderings,
That our words and thoughts
Would lead the children we serve
Closer to you.
And in so doing,
May we be drawn closer to you as well.

All this we pray
In the name of your most precious child,
Jesus Christ,
Who by his life,
Taught us how to learn,
How to teach,
And how to meet you a-new
Each and every day.

Amen.
